VYLH-Philippines Launching #FolicAcidPH, The 1st National Social Media day for Folic acid Awareness

This July 18, Volunteer Youth Leaders for Health (VYLH) – Philippines, a national collaboration of youth leaders of youth organizations in universities and communities in the Philippines, will be launching the first National Social Media day for Folic Acid Awareness, #FolicAcidPH. The social media activity aims to increase public awareness on the vitamin, its sources, and its role for good health and the prevention of neural tube defects (NTDs).

Studies have shown that the intake of folic acid or vitamin B9 through supplementation and food fortification can significantly reduce the risk of neural tube defects (NTDs) or problems on the development of the baby’s brain and spine. NTDs comprise one of the most common group of serious birth defects and these may result in immediate infant death, deformity or disability. Although there are efforts directed towards increasing awareness, knowledge and consumption of folic acid, the full potential of folic acid to reduce the risk of NTDs has not yet realized in most countries, including the Philippines.

In the Philippines, awareness on the significance of folic acid supplementation among Filipino women in reproductive age is presumed to be low. Furthermore, folate deficiency has been determined to exist. According to the 7th National Nutrition Survey by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute-DOST, 1 in every 5 pinays is folate deficient. Hence, there is a need for increasing public awareness on this matter, especially in the absence of a legislation on folic acid fortification, supplementation and public education.

In order to promote public awareness, #FolicAcidPH will utilize Facebook, Twitter and Thunderclap as its major online platforms. Suggested tweets, status messages and infographics will also be provided by the youth network. Aside from these, interested youth groups, government agencies, and non-government organizations are invited to join the cause and become a partner of the social media campaign.

Aside from the social media campaign, VYLH-Philippines will also be celebrating its 7th Founding Anniversary on the same day. It was on the night of July 18, 2009 when its pioneer batch composed of 78 volunteer youth leaders accepted the challenge of promoting folic acid awareness as one of the flagship health advocacies of the network.

Medicard Introduces FoodPrint - Food Intolerance Testing

If you are feeling bloated, dizzy or if you suffer from headaches after eating certain types of food, you might want to have yourself checked for food intolerance. Your body may be “secretly” reacting to the food you have just eaten. It is also possible that some of the recurring health issues you have been experiencing are caused by certain food that your body cannot tolerate.

According to Dr. Nicky Montoya, president of MediCard Philippines, a leading health maintenance organization, “food intolerance, unlike food allergy, manifests symptoms gradually, usually 72 hours to a few days after eating the offending food. It may cause different inflammatory symptoms which may affect different organs of the body and manifests as weight gain, bloating, migraine, body aches and pains including joint pains, PMS, depression etc. These can also become worse over time and may lead to more serious health problems, such as heart disease, cancer and the likes, if ignored.” Due to food intolerance’ delayed onset to manifest in the body, it is difficult to trace the root cause which is often just the food you are intolerant to.

MediCard has recently introduced FoodPrint, the most advanced and comprehensive food intolerance testing, to its members. This food intolerance test from the UK helps identify the food groups that trigger health problems. It involves exposing your body to 220 food items then taking a pin-prick sample of your blood for analysis. The test is a preventive measure and lifestyle modification tool. Knowing what food your body cannot tolerate can help you get rid of the symptoms and prevents the development of other diseases, like cancer and diabetes.

Food intolerance is a detrimental reaction of the body after ingesting certain food and beverages, which usually triggers a mild inflammatory reaction of the gut and digestive problems, like diarrhea and constipation. Its other symptoms include migraines, moodiness, and tiredness at certain times of the day, and difficulty losing weight.

MediCard offers a discounted rate for the Food Intolerance Test—PHP 11,400 for MediCard members and PHP 12,000 for non-members until July 31, 2016 only. After the test, you will be given a personalized food report and dietary guidebook.

The innovative service is offered at the MediCard Lifestyle Center, a first-of-its-kind wellness center in Makati, and at the MediCard clinics in Centris, EDSA and Alabang. To avail of the service, call the MediCard Lifestyle Center at (02) 894-5720 or 878-5101, MediCard Centris, EDSA at (02) 920-5164 or 775-4629, and MediCard Alabang at (02) 850-3209 or 807-9219.

Paseo De Roxas To Be Closed For Makati Block Party

Mouth-watering gastronomic delights, a kiddie fun fair, and great entertainment await everyone at the Makati Block Party, which promises to delight everyone on Sunday, July 3, 2016.

Capitalizing on the distinct Makati vibe and community spirit, the business district’s iconic avenues will be transformed into a culinary street party that will feature some of the most well-loved vendors of the famed Salcedo weekend market, a revered Makati tradition, and benchmark of all weekend markets around the country. Over the years, Salcedo Market has become the melting pot of Makati residents and guests who come over each weekend to relax and come together as a community.

The Makati Block Party recreates this community spirit, and takes it several notches higher with the partial road closure of Paseo de Roxas, a major city thoroughfare, for this culinary street experience.  For one afternoon, the city’s pedestrian-friendly streets will come alive with friendly banter and the street vibe that is distinctly, uniquely Makati’s. With the party happening footsteps away from famous Ayala Avenue landmarks, people can simply walk to take part in the community festivities.

The Makati Block Party promises something for everybody, from 4PM until 10PM, Paseo de Roxas, the stretch between Ayala Avenue to Makati Avenue adjacent to the Ayala Triangle Gardens, will be transformed into a gastronomic festival centered on Salcedo Market, with lots of exciting activities synonymous to Makati’s hip lifestyle. A curated selection of Salcedo Market vendors will be on hand for a culinary street extravaganza as they serve up their signature offerings that people from all over Metro Manila come for every weekend – baked goods, artisanal delights, hometown favorites, and the most luscious concoctions whipped up by homegrown chefs and foodies.

“We aim to create communal spaces where residents and friends can converge, so that we can bring the community closer together. Over the years, the Salcedo Market has served this purpose.  The Makati Block Party builds on this tradition and takes it to the streets, with the hope to get the Makati community to use the streets more for activities and things that they love to do,” said Shiella Aguilar, Project Development Manager of Makati.

Kids who tag along with their parents can look forward to fun-filled activities at Kids on the Block by Hunt & Gather. Let the kids discover their inner artist with art and crown-making sessions, or play to their heart’s content with interactive fun.

For those who are just lounging around, musical performances by Vince Lahorra’s Quartet and Johnoy Danao will keep everyone entertained throughout the evening.  As an added treat, Snoopy and The Lorax will be ready to meet and greet all the kids and young at heart.
Wellness buffs and strained souls can find some relaxation with free yoga sessions at the Ayala Triangle Gardens with a Vinyasa Music Night Class by Urban Ashram Manila.
The Makati Block Party once again showcases Makati as the go-to destination for the best food, entertainment and lifestyle offerings as it imprints a great community vibe. It also captures the city’s efforts to increase walkability in the area by providing activities that encourage people to actively use its streets.

“The Makati Block Party gives residents and visitors something fun and relaxing to do, right in their own community, on a weekend. It’s our way of bringing activities and treats that residents love and enjoy, just a few steps away from where they live. We want people to discover that there’s lots to do and enjoy just by walking and exploring the streets of the city,” said Aguilar.
