Kai And Junior - First Manatees To Arrive In Guadeloupe

River Safari’s Kai and Junior are set to become the first two manatees in over a century to arrive in Guadeloupe. The pair are pioneer animals for the world’s first manatee re-population programme.

Spearheaded by the National Park of Guadeloupe, the historic conservation project aims to reintroduce the Antillean manatees in Guadeloupe through a breeding programme with a founding group of 15 manatees from various zoological institutions. An important cultural symbol locally, the West Indian manatee species has been extinct in the waters of Guadeloupe since the beginning of the 20th century as a result of excessive hunting activities.
Kai and Junior will be the first to arrive at the Grand Cul-de-sac Marin, a protected bay which measures 15,000 hectares and would shield the manatees from boating traffic by way of an enforced no-entry zone. The future offspring from this founding group will be reintroduced to the wild, eventually repopulating the Caribbean region.
Dr. Cheng Wen-Haur, Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Chief Life Sciences Officer, Wildlife Reserves Singapore, said, “We have been very successful in breeding manatees in our care for the past 20 years. We are very happy that this success will now contribute to restocking part of the species’ historic range in the Caribbean where it has been extinct for the past century. Projects like this is one of many ways that we are contributing to the survival of species in the wild.”
Kai and Junior have been selected as they have reached sexual maturity, and are best pals inside the aquarium due to age similarity. Kai was born on 8 October 2009 and Junior was born on 2 February 2010. They are almost inseparable, and can often be spotted swimming and feeding together.

Kai and Junior’s flight to Guadeloupe will occur within the next few weeks, and is likely to take more than 30 hours with several pit stops. Although a date has not been set, aquarists have been busy conducting operant conditioning, and spending extra time with them before the final farewell. Canvas conditioning is required to ensure that both manatees are comfortable and familiar with the material on export day. Kai and Junior will take turns to be guided to rest on their canvases, and a hoist will then lift the canvas to place the manatees inside their open top traveling crates, custom-fitted to their lengths.

These crates are lined with thick sponge to ensure that Kai and Junior remain comfortable throughout the flight, and also to absorb water which has to be periodically sprayed on the manatees to keep their skin moist. In true VIP style, Kai and Junior will have their personal flight entourage, which includes veterinarians from the National Park of Guadeloupe, and two aquarists from River Safari.
“The ultimate conservation goal would be to reintroduce threatened animal species to the wild and yet it is a very rare opportunity for this to happen as there is a severe lack of suitable wild habitats, among other challenges. We are very happy that the manatees will have such an opportunity. We are confident that Kai and Junior will do well for the good of their species”, said Keith So, Deputy Head Aquarist at River Safari.
Manatees are currently listed as Vulnerable in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Their numbers have declined in the last century due to hunting pressures, entrapment in commercial nets and collisions with propellers and motorboats.

L'Oréal Professionnel x Regine's Salon Modern Bride Looks

Are you tired of outdated bride looks?

L'Oreal Professionnel and Regine's Salon introduce hair color as a get-gorgeous upgrade for every bride-to-be. There's a million and one ways a bride-to-be employs to be extra beautiful on her wedding day, whether that's spending a mini-fortune on her wedding dress, getting the best make-up artist to do a masterpiece of an airbrush job, and even spending hours contemplating on the bouquet palette that will complement her bridal glow. Turns out, there's more to where a bride can look to in getting stunning on her big day—for the hair experts at L'Oreal Professionnel and Regine's Salon, it's through an update in hair color.

The idea is not as extreme as one would imagine. Think subtle colors that complement a bride's natural look instead of straying from it, or highlights that will only further enhance the bride's given features. Regine's Salon partnered with L'Oreal Professionnel in dreaming up three looks to illustrate the idea. Together, they gathered the best beauty and style creatives in the industry and the country's most gorgeous faces to front the campaign.

Using L'Oreal Professionnel hair color products matched with the newest in hair dyeing techniques from Regine’s Salon, hair extensions by celebrity favorite Tokyo Posh, Iya Yujuico for makeup, and elegant wedding gowns from designer Mark Bumgarner, model personalities Xandra Rocha-Araneta, Luane Dy and Karen Pamintuan were made up in different bridal hair looks perfect for any modern bride. The bridal campaign was captured by celebrated lensman and most sought-after wedding photographer in the country, Pat Dy who made the colors of the hair come even more alive in the photos.

A great way to incorporate color in long hair—in such a way that it looks natural—is by fluid painting, a process where the hair is laid flat into a surface and literally painted over with hair dye. This way, color transfers naturally onto the hair to avoid making it look too calculated and exact as the traditional method of coloring. With this treatment, the color adjusts as the hair grows naturally, perfect for any no-fuss bride-to-be whose aim is to look effortless.

Perfect for brides opting for a subtle and sophisticated look, baby lights involves dyeing the hair with very fine highlights at all layers of the hair using foils. This makes the highlights noticeable at any way the hair is parted. That way, the colors blend with the hair's original color, making for a sleek option for any bride who would want to look beautiful and polished at all angles.

For brides who'd like to keep it short and sweet—this mixture of lowlight and highlight shades result in a natural, yet striking look. With the use of naturally cascading, intertwined shades, the balayage treatment, another freestyle hair dyeing technique suited for shorter hair, is perfect for brides doing their hair in coils, twists and curls–very feminine bridal hair further enhanced by color.

L'Oreal Professionnel will make these techniques available for every bride-to-be at Regine's Salon, with the use of two key L'Oreal Professionnel products: the Blond Studio hair lightening line, used by colorists fluent in the art of fluid painting, baby lights, and balayage, and the Dia Richesse Hi Visibility line, that gives low commitment, tone-on-tone hair color, designed to give ultra-visible shiny color even on dark hair, perfect for brides who are always on-the-go.

Regine's Salon is located at Eton Emerald in Ortigas, The Link in Makati, and Alabang Town Center in Alabang, Muntinlupa.

Women OFWs Shine With Coca Cola’s Women REACH! Program

The first batch of women scholars, composed of former overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their families under the Women Entrepreneurs Reintegrated and Economically Active at Home (WOMEN REACH!) Program, recently graduated from the Sari-Sari Store Training and Access to Resources (STAR) Basic Entrepreneurship and Gender Sensitivity Training.

The WOMEN REACH! Program is a partnership program of Coca-Cola Philippines, the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) that seeks to provide women OFWs with micro-entrepreneurial skills training and business enhancement kits upon their return and to encourage them to stay for good in the country.

Barely four months after the roll-out of the WOMEN REACH! Program, 43 women graduated with the technical skills and network to help them better manage their chosen micro-enterprises, many of which are home-based sari-sari stores and carinderia.

“This is our way of helping women OFWs, their families, and their communities, achieve economic sustainability in the long run. By giving them technical skills and access to resources, the Company is helping women overcome the obstacles that they may encounter in running their micro-enterprises,” said Atty. Adel Tamano, Vice President for Public Affairs and Communications, Coca-Cola Philippines.

Most women OFWs are often caught unaware of the social cost of working abroad. The DOLE’s Institute for Labor Studies said that the continuing feminization of migration has the most detrimental impact to the family and children, especially when it’s the mother who goes abroad for work. The ILS cited that families often go through a lot of major adjustments when women migrate because along with her also goes the caregiving and nurturing responsibilities.

A combination of several program components, the WOMEN REACH! Program is composed of the STAR program of Coca-Cola Philippines and TESDA, and the Assist WELL (Welfare, Employment, Livelihood, and Legal) program of DOLE and its attached agencies, which aims to swiftly and efficiently provide assistance for returning OFWs.

The STAR Program is part of the 5by20 global initiative of the Coca-Cola Company to empower 5 million women within its value chain by the year 2020. Started in 2011, the STAR Program is implemented nationwide and has already touched the lives of more than 47,000 women micro-entrepreneurs, out of the 200,000 target in the Philippines up to year 2020.

Under the WOMEN REACH! Program, returning women OFWs with existing micro-retailing businesses, such as sari-sari stores or carinderia automatically qualify for STAR Program scholarship and undergo the Basic Entrepreneurship and Gender Sensitivity Training at the STAR Center for Excellence inside the TESDA Women’s Center in Taguig City.

By virtue of DOLE Order No. 139-14, the Assist WELL Program is a package of free assistance and services to ensure the successful reintegration of returning OFWs. Currently, there are international Assist WELL Processing Centers in Seoul, South Korea and in Dubai, UAE. In the Philippines, one process center is established in every region, except for regions 8 and 6, which have two centers each, and the National Capital Region which has processing centers at the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, and the National Reintegration Center for OFWs.
