The Medical Wellness Association (MWA), a US-based global wellness organization, has officially declared 2026 as “The Year of the Sardine.” The announcement aims to help consumers make better everyday food choices by focusing on real, nutritionally dense, and affordable foods—something many families, especially moms managing household meals, can truly appreciate.

According to the Medical Wellness Association, wellness indicators worldwide continue to decline, largely driven by poor metabolic health. Research increasingly links metabolic health not just to conditions like Type 2 diabetes and fatty liver disease, but also to cardiovascular issues, certain cancers, and organ dysfunction. In response, MWA is encouraging a return to simple, nutrient-rich foods—and sardines are leading that message.

Dr. Christopher Breuleux, President of MWA, explains that improving metabolic health starts with everyday food decisions. Sardines stand out because they are naturally rich in protein, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals, while remaining one of the most budget-friendly protein sources available. For families trying to eat healthier without stretching the grocery budget, that combination matters.

MWA faculty member and board representative James Michael Lafferty adds that sardines are gaining global attention, from health podcasts to social media trends like the “three-day sardine fast.” Even before the metabolic health conversation gained traction, the global sardine market was already growing at an annual rate of about 7.5%. With updated nutrition guidelines and increased awareness, MWA forecasts growth to exceed 10% annually starting in 2026—an indicator, they believe, of positive changes in how people approach food and wellness.

As part of its long-term review of sardine products, MWA awarded its “Superfood” seal in mid-2025 to Mega Prime Foods, Inc. for its Mega Sardines brand. The recognition was based on the brand’s sourcing from South Pacific fishing waters and its vertically integrated “catch to can in 12 hours” process, which prioritizes freshness and quality.

For Filipino families, this recognition resonates deeply. Mega Prime Foods has long embraced the Filipino value of malasakit—serving the community with care and responsibility. Under the leadership of CEO Michelle Tiu Lim Chan, the company is also supporting university-backed clinical studies to further explore how food choices impact metabolic health.

For moms planning meals, juggling budgets, and thinking about long-term family wellness, “The Year of the Sardine” is a reminder that health doesn’t always require expensive or complicated solutions. Sometimes, it starts with what’s already in the pantry.
