It has often
been said that education is the best inheritance parents can give their
children. For Carol Malonzo, Lily Prescasiosa, and Cherry Magpayo, participating
in Colgate’s new scholarship program--which gives more Filipino children a
chance to receive financial assistance to support their schooling—has given
these moms the opportunity to support their children’s dream of completing
their education.
A welcome
blessing
Receiving a
scholarship prize of Php 100,000 from Colgate is a welcome blessing for the
three moms, who were among the five grand prize winners of the Colgate
Scholarship Promo’s first draw.
For housewife
Carol, whose husband works as a warehouse man, the windfall will enable her to
pay for son John Arwyn’s full tuition for the next school year instead of
paying it in tranches. “Nakabase lang
kasi lahat ng pang-gastos namin sa kita ng papa ni John, kaya napakalaking
bagay ng scholarship na ito para sa amin,” says Carol.

John
Brenton Prescasiosa, whose father became an OFW to help establish their family,
has his sights set on a teaching career with
the help of the scholarship prize of Php 100,000 from
Colgate.

Like any
typical youngster, Carol’s nine-year-old son still has not quite made up his
mind on what he wants to be when he grows up. “Marami syang gusto: scientist, engineer, nurse,” says Carol, “pero para sa amin, kung anong gusto nyang
kursong kuhanin nila ay okay lang, basta dun sa maligaya siya.”
Cherry, also a
housewife who diligently saves the earnings of her seaman husband, says that
the winnings will be an added supplement to their budget for the schooling of
their 8-year-old daughter Christelle.
“Kaya kami nag-apply sa scholarship
[promo] para talaga makatulong sa pag-aaral ni Christelle,” says Cherry. She shares that
her daughter, inspired by the well-dressed people working at a pharmaceutical
company near their house and whom she sees on her way to school, wants to
pursue being a chemist as she sees it as a way for their family to become
financially stable.
Lily is
equally delighted to have won the scholarship grant for son John Brenton, who
is currently taking up AB History at Arellano University. “Kaya
Lily, who supplements the family income working as a book-keeper.
Lily shares
that John Brenton has his sights set on a teaching career. “Balak niyang maging professor kaya makakatulong talaga itong aming
Extending
opportunities
“Education has
always been a cornerstone of Colgate’s community service programs,” said Jay
Custodio, Associate Director for Oral Care. “Through this initiative, we aim to
provide more Filipino children access to education so they can take advantage
of the opportunities it opens to achieve a brighter future that they can smile
about.”
Apart from
providing financial assistance to select dentistry students and symposia to
partner schools (Philippine Association of Dental Colleges), and driving oral
health education among young students through the Bright Smiles, Bright Futures
initiative, Colgate extends scholarship opportunities to more Filipino children
with its new scholarship promo, giving over Php 3.5 million worth of
scholarships and prizes with every purchase of specially-marked Colgate Maximum
Cavity Protection Great Regular Flavor toothpaste cartons or any Colgate
toothpaste sachet. The promo is set to run until December 15, 2016.
