Palawan Group and DSWD MIMAROPA Support Financial Literacy for 4Ps Families

Managing a family budget involves more than making ends meet each month. For many Filipino families, it also means finding ways to save, preparing for emergencies, protecting limited resources, and making financial decisions that can help provide greater stability in the future.

To help more families develop these practical skills, the Palawan Group of Companies has partnered with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) MIMAROPA to provide additional financial education and resources to beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps).

The partnership will incorporate financial literacy and financial protection topics into DSWD's Family Development Sessions (FDS), helping participating families learn practical ways to become better prepared for everyday expenses and unexpected financial challenges.

What are Family Development Sessions for 4Ps beneficiaries?

Family Development Sessions are part of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) and provide beneficiaries with information that can help strengthen family well-being and self-sufficiency.

Topics can include financial literacy, family welfare, disaster preparedness, and other practical areas relevant to managing a household.

Through the new partnership, Palawan Group will participate in FDS activities in MIMAROPA and provide additional information related to financial preparedness and protection.

For parents managing a household on a limited budget, understanding concepts such as saving, emergency preparedness, responsible financial decisions, and financial protection can be particularly valuable.

Helping Families Build Financial Resilience

One of the main goals of the partnership is to help families understand financial resilience.

Simply put, financial resilience is a household's ability to cope with unexpected expenses or changes in its financial situation.

An emergency, accident, loss of income, or other unexpected event can quickly affect a family's budget. Financial education can help families understand different ways of preparing for these situations while making informed decisions based on their own circumstances and available resources.

“Building financial resilience is not only about earning and saving. It is also about being prepared for the unexpected,” said Lisa Castro-Sabado, Chief Business Development Officer of Palawan Group of Companies.

“Through the Family Development Sessions, we have an opportunity to help families better understand financial protection and introduce practical options like ProtekTODO.”

Financial Protection as Part of Family Preparedness

Another topic that may be discussed during the sessions is financial protection.

Beneficiaries may be introduced to Palawan ProtekTODO, the insurance agency arm of Palawan Group operating under PPS Insurance Agency, Inc. (PPSIA), as one example of financial protection that families can consider.

Rather than discussing insurance separately from everyday money management, the sessions aim to place financial protection within the wider idea of preparing for emergencies and unexpected expenses.

For families considering any insurance or financial protection product, it is still important to understand the coverage, exclusions, premiums, eligibility requirements, claims process, and other terms before deciding whether it suits their needs and budget.

Supporting 4Ps Families Through Financial Education

DSWD MIMAROPA said the partnership could provide additional support to disadvantaged and underserved families participating in 4Ps.

“This partnership will be a significant help to disadvantaged communities and underserved families, particularly our Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) beneficiaries,” said Princess Vagilidad, Director III and concurrent Officer-in-Charge of DSWD Field Office IV-MIMAROPA.

“By providing them with opportunities to strengthen their financial literacy and resilience, we hope to help them build a more secure and sustainable future.”

The collaboration also demonstrates how government programs and private-sector organizations can work together to bring additional resources and practical financial knowledge closer to communities.

For families, the lessons can extend beyond the sessions themselves. Learning how to manage a household budget, prepare for unexpected expenses, understand financial products, and evaluate financial protection options can contribute to better-informed money decisions over time.
